Look in the mirror. What do you see?
There was a time in my life a few years ago when I was asked to name 3 positive characteristics about myself. I struggled to find an answer. If I were to ask you that right now, would you have an answer?
If you have any answer, any positive thing to say about yourself, it’s correct because it’s what you think of yourself. The only wrong answer is not having one.
In order to love others, your spouse, your best friend, your family, your neighbor, your co-worker, etc... you first have to love yourself.
Jesus told us to keep two commandments: love God with everything you have and to love others as yourself.
Loving yourself is a commandment from God. Many people struggle with that. I used to struggle with that. Often times that’s because regret and failure distorts the way we are able to see ourself. It creates a dirty smudge on the mirror of our soul. You look deep inside and mistakes cover up your identity. We’re unable to forgive ourselves of the mistakes we have made or are making and we see a broken, ugly image of ourselves.
If God has chosen to forgive you when he doesn’t even have to, start on the process of forgiving yourself. The enemy wants to remind you of what you’re not and God says “look at who you are!” Now it’s going to be hard to love God if you don’t think he loves you back but let me tell you that he does. In Spight of your past and mistakes and your current struggles, right now, in this very moment, before you can try to do 10 things right... in the middle of depression. In the middle of addiction. In the middle of self abuse. He loves you. There’s nothing you can do to change that. You have to accept it. It’s called grace and it will change your life. When you fully understand and simply receive that free gift of grace and forgiveness, you can love God with all your heart, soul, and mind like Jesus said. Then, when you know what he thinks of you. When you know he has forgiven you. When you know he has a plan for you. When you know he spoke you into existence and doesn’t make mistakes. When you know you have a purpose. When you know the God of this universe would send Jesus here to live a perfect life and die on a cross just to give you his Holy Spirit to live inside of YOU. You realize your worth is so much more than the opinions of others or even any negative opinion of yourself. You can and you will be able to love yourself. You can and you will be able to receive love from others. You can and you will be able to love others back. You will see confidence in the mirror. You will see someone of value in the mirror. No one will ever be able to change your mind. The enemy will whisper lies but you will respond with truth. You will ignore him and you will tell yourself the truth:
“I am a child of God. I was bought at a price. Jesus loves me. He doesn’t bring up or see my mistakes. They are forgiven and forgotten. I’m a winner. I have a purpose. Shut up devil. I can’t hear you. My God is speaking to me and he says I have overcome. He says he has a plan to prosper me. I am above and not beneath. I am blessed from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.”
Don’t let anyone ever tell you anything different. Start receiving Gods grace and forgiveness today. Be set free from yourself today.
